Rasta Baby

Grandma & Grandpa just returned from their vacation to Dominica, and brought the coolest hat back for him!

I am starting to think that MAYBE I should try to get him to nap during the day without staying in my arms. I usually just nurse him to sleep and then hold him in place across my lap on the Boppy until we wakes up, then we play a bit, then we do it all over again. I’m just thinking that maybe I could get caught up on some stuff if I could manage to get up off the couch during his naps (not to mention that if I watch one more minute of daytime TV I’m going to lose it.) Actually, today he’s been napping in his swing for over an hour and it’s made me so uncomfortable and nervous! I’m just not used to it, and instead of doing anything worthwhile, I’ve been sitting in my normal place just looking at him and waiting for him to wake up again. Bah — I’m a loser!

When I learned I was pregnant, I was so convinced I would not want to work outside the home, period. Now that he’s here, I’m really thinking that working a few afernoons a week (no more than 20 hours) would be ideal for us. I’m mostly focusing on things I can do while at home though, so that is working for us so far. I just really miss interaction with people and getting out of the house. We’re going to go for a walk this afternoon and that usually makes me feel better. It’s going to be 65 degrees here tomorrow!!

I’m also re-thinking cloth diapering again. If I can talk Seth into it, and we had a few hundred dollars to invest in them, I totally want to do it. Fingers crossed (haven’t talked to him about it yet).

noa started giving me signs he was ready to nap away from me, burrowing and being fussy if it was too bright or stimulating. he’d sleep deeper and stay asleep if i put him down up in our bed, and now we do that twice a day (i even read him a tniy book and then nurse him). right now he’s asleep on me, tho, so not all his baby snoozes are mommy-free. having an hour or three free from watching or holding him has been great, tho it’s a bit sad to give up the cuddling, too.

he’s also conking out earlier at night very soundly, so i take him upstairs and he sleeps well alone for a while. there’s no harm in trying new rituals now. 3-4 months is when their sleep cycles begin to regulate. if you try a few days and it doesnt work, you back off and wait til he’s a bit older. :-)

I haven’t broached the topic with Seth yet, because I am sure he will fight it, but I think we’ll talk about it this weekend. We just went through almost a whole 96 pack of diapers in record time, and I really don’t mind doing laundry. Sigh.

That sounds like very good advice — thank you! Gray got VERY fussy last night and I started wondering if maybe we should be putting him down earlier. I’ve been used to keeping him up until I go to bed, (selfishly, because then he lets me sleep gloriously late) so maybe I need to rethink that.

it’s natural to keep him up — the baby sleep cycle the first 2-4 months is to go to night sleep aound 10-11 pm (and to have irregular sleep with feedings interspersed), often able to sleep anywhere). then it changes to 8-9, or even to 6-7 by 4-5 months, with a need for regularity to avoid the build-up of overtired energy. i really believe in naps, just from watching other folks with their kids!

the book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child is pretty good and broken into chapters by age range and problems, for quick reference. i dont agree with all the things he says, but it has some great analysis of sleep patterns and the changes in the body, and how to encourage good sleep early on. :-) he does say that the 12 hrs of night sleep they grow into does not mean they give up 1-2 feedings a night until around 9 months. so now i can say noa sleeps thru the night and it’s true — he doesnt really wake for those feedings! (sorry to be longwinded)
