Crib Sleeping, Night #2

by mcjessica on May 26, 2007

It’s been a while since we tried getting Grayson to sleep in his crib. Yes, we have been co-sleeping. No, I never thought we’d be a co-sleeping family. Frankly I would do it again for the next babe, BUT would definitely try to ensure that the baby can sleep on his/her own, without nursing to sleep 100% of the time and being held 100% of the time. Gray is 16 months old and I have rarely been able to put him down for a single nap, or leave the bed once he is asleep. That gets really old, dude.

Last night we decided for a clean start now that things have somewhat calmed down (oh yeah, we’ve put our house on the market and have also been way busy with work & websites). We did bedtime routine, then kissed him good night and Seth put him down in the crib. We closed the door and walked out. He screamed for about 5 minutes, then started a whole litany of what can only be described as incredibly pissed-off babble. “Duh-DUH! D-d-d-DUH!” We went in to reassure him after a little bit, which of course made him upset all over again, but then he calmed pretty quickly and was quiet for a long time.

He only cried one more time all night, around 1am, but only for a few minutes.

Here’s the incredible thing (at least, incredible to us): He stayed sitting up, though mostly asleep, ALL NIGHT LONG. He was in the crib for 10 hours and never once laid down. As of this moment, he’s been in the crib for an hour tonight and is also still sitting up. I am just trying to force myself to believe that he will eventually get the hang of sleeping on his own, and that he will lie down. Oh boy. I guess the good thing is that, even after being in there for 30 minutes tonight, he was already fighting sleep while sitting up. At least he’s getting sleepy, right?

I’m trying to cram 5 hours of work into the rest of tonight, so I’m off to do that now.
